On the one hand, the measured drilling parameters and formation parameters are adjusted in a timely manner to guide the drill bit trajectory along the direction of the target layer. At the same time, due to the fact that the formation parameters obtained from LWD/MWD are just drilled formation parameters, they are closest to the original state of the formation and are more advantageous for evaluating oil and gas content in complex formations. The LWD/MWD is placed inside the drill collar. In addition to measuring conventional logging such as resistivity, sound velocity, neutron porosity, density, and some imaging logging, LWD/MWD also measures drilling parameters such as drilling pressure, torque, speed, annulus pressure, temperature, and chemical composition.
Application:
Drilling fluid pressure pulse transmission is widely used in LWD/MWD, which converts the measured parameters into drilling fluid pressure pulses and transmits them to the surface along with the drilling fluid circulation. Its advantages are economy and convenience. In order to improve the transmission rate, electromagnetic wave transmission technology has been used. It places LWD/MWD in a non-magnetic drill collar, with an insulated short section between the non-magnetic drill collar and the upper drill rod, to facilitate the propagation of low-frequency electromagnetic waves carrying the measured information to the surrounding formation. Its advantage is high transmission rate and not affected by the performance of drilling fluid. In addition, there is also an underground storage method that stores all data in the underground memory and recovers the data after drilling, which has the advantages of low cost and reliable data storage. LWD/MWD can be used for geological guidance, guiding drilling, and evaluating the oil and gas content of complex wells and formations.
